The Binding Problem (Chimera)

None

Lyrics

[Intro]

Whisper to me, Chimera, in this Lycian dusk,
your three heads bound in one impossible frame.
Homer saw you, eighth century BCE, lion-fronted,
snake behind, goat in the middle, breathing fire.

[Verse 1]
I address you, bronze statue in Florence's museum,
Etruscan craft from the fifth century,
your goat head bearded, strangely gendered,
a fusion that defies the eye's logic.
How do your parts cohere, in the brain's theater?
The binding problem, they call it now,
neural signals from disparate streams,
visual cortex firing for your lion mane,
auditory for the hiss and bleat,
yet one monster emerges, whole.

[Chorus]
Oh, Chimera, my fractured self,
in the scorch of your sulfur breath,
intense heat at twilight in Anatolia,
charred earth under Pegasus' shadow.
Bellerophon with Athena's golden bridle,
soared to slay you, to resolve the discord.
But in my skull, the synthesis falters,
sensations unbound, a triple roar unresolved.

[Verse 2]
Feel the dissonance, the lion's growl merging
with goat's cry, serpent's venomous sigh,
echoing Hesiod's Theogony, lines 319 to 325,
circa 700 BCE, offspring of Typhon and Echidna.
Neuroscience maps it: the integration failure,
parietal lobe struggling to weave the threads,
like your body in Apollodorus' Bibliotheca,
Book 2.3.1, second century BCE,
destroyed but lingering in the mind's eye.

[Bridge]

Address me back, hybrid beast,
in this intimate bind, where senses collide.
The acrid ash, the molten rock scent,
at dusk's transition, your liminal truth.
What if we don't bind? What chaos blooms?

[Verse 3]
In the wilderness of Lycia, no room confines you,
but in my cortex, the room is gray matter,
folding upon itself, trying to make one from many.
Your devouring of sheep, unnamed villagers' loss,
mirrors the mind's hunger for unity,
yet the anomaly persists, like Kuhn's paradigms shifting.

[Outro]

Chimera, rest now, in the improbable glow.
The binding, imperfect, but ours.
