Red Headache 3D Nightmare
(1995) Virtual Boy — red monochrome 3D, nausea, flop; psychedelic uncomfortable track, red-screen blues.
Lyrics
Hot plastic smell. The room is quiet. Just the whine of a motor you can feel in your teeth. Two eyeholes in the dark, a promise of depth. Come on in. A master's last strange dream, Gunpei Yokoi. He gave us the Game Boy, he gave us this poison. I lean into the visor, the world goes away. The neck strap is tight, keeping me here. Six AA batteries pressed into your back. All that weight for a world made of red wire. It's a parallax romance, a dizzying dance. Red lines on a black screen, my one and only chance to see the future. But the future is sick. The spinning mirror flickers, oh so quick. This is my Red Headache 3D Nightmare. I can't look away, I'm already there. July 21, 1995. Fluorescent lights bleed around the edges of the eyepiece. I'm serving a ghost tennis ball in a crimson court. There's no one else to see it, this is a solo sport. You were never meant to be shared. A private sickness, a future impaired. It's a parallax romance, a dizzying dance. Red lines on a black screen, my one and only chance to see the future. But the future is sick. The spinning mirror flickers, oh so quick. This is my Red Headache 3D Nightmare. I can't look away, I'm already there. My optic nerve is screaming. The motor whines and slows. The image collapses, it folds in on itself. From a 3D world to a single, blurry line. A red scar burning across the void. I pull my face away. The real world hurts my eyes. There's a red ghost behind my eyelids now. A ghost of you. You just sit on the carpet. Silent.
