Ode to the Liar Paradox

The ancient self-undermining claim: 'This statement is false.' If true it must be false; if false it must be true. An ode to the sentence that breaks logic by turning on itself — the first crack in the edifice of certainty, discovered by Epimenides and sharpened by Russell. The album's first statement is also its first trap. | PRODUCTION NOTE: The sonic form enacts the paradox. The chorus is a single proposition — 'This song is false' — returned to again and again without resolution. Each verse approaches the paradox from a different angle and deposits the listener back at the same self-undermining claim. The track cannot be true; it cannot be false. It loops.

Lyrics

Listen carefully.
There is a sentence.
And the sentence is a lie.

He woke in the cave near Knossos.
Epimenides, after fifty-seven years of stone-cold sleep.
The air tasted of goat and limestone dust.
The light outside was a blade.
He walked into the marketplace, a ghost from another time.
And he said the words that broke the world in half:
"Every Cretan is a liar."
And the logicians came, and they asked him:
"Prophet, were you telling us the truth?"

This song is false.
This song is false.

Centuries later. Cambridge. 1901.
Bertrand Russell is building God from scratch.
With axioms and ink.
He finds a crack in the foundation.
A set that contains all sets... that do not contain themselves.
A polite letter to Gottlob Frege.
"Dear colleague, I have found a contradiction."
And a life's work crumbles.
The same little worm, turning in the apple of pure reason.

This song is false.
This song is false.

This isn't a puzzle to be solved.
It's a gear that jams the whole machine.
It's the name you cannot say.
The barber who shaves himself, or doesn't.
The mirror that shows you only the mirror.
If it's true, it points to its own lie.
If it's false, it tells the perfect truth.
A switch that is both on and off.
A door that is open and closed.

This song is false.
And because I say so, it is true.
This song is false.
And because it's true, it is a lie.

The tape runs out.
The needle hits the groove.
And it begins again.
Where does it begin?
