Debt Jubilee

Sumerian *amargi*. Biblical Leviticus 25 — every 49 years all debts forgiven, all slaves freed. The radical idea that civilization needs reset buttons. Dr.Pope's longue-durée gospel-tinged anthem.

Lyrics

The slate grows heavy. The tally marks bleed. The body itself becomes the collateral. The land remembers a name that is not its owner's.
We are in Lagash. Twenty-four hundred years before the story you think you know. The sun is a hammer on the clay brick. A man named Urukagina stands in the square. He has seen the sons sold for the father's debt. He has read the tablets, the endless lines of obligation. He speaks a word into the dust.
Blow the shofar! Sound the horn across the seventh seventh year! Let the land lie fallow and the heart be healed! Proclaim liberty throughout the land! Let every man, every woman, return! A Jubilee! A shaking off of burdens!
We are in Athens. Almost two thousand years have passed. But the chains are the same. Solon walks through the Agora. He hears the sound of metal on stone, not from the forge, but from the wrists of his neighbors. He calls it Seisachtheia. A shaking off. The sound of a burden dropped. The sound of a body remembering it belongs to itself.
Blow the shofar! Sound the horn across the seventh seventh year! Let the land lie fallow and the heart be healed! Proclaim liberty throughout the land! Let every man, every woman, return! A Jubilee! A shaking off of burdens!
The first word for it… the oldest one we have… wasn't *freedom*. It was *ama-gi*. *Ama-gi*. Return to mother. Not just unchained, but returned. To the field your grandfather plowed. To the arms that held you first. The slate wiped clean is not an empty thing. It is a homecoming.
BLOW THE SHOFAR! SOUND THE HORN ACROSS THE SEVENTH SEVENTH YEAR! LET THE LAND LIE FALLOW AND THE HEART BE HEALED! PROCLAIM LIBERTY THROUGHOUT ALL THE LAND! LET EVERY MAN, EVERY WOMAN, RETURN! A JUBILEE! A SHAKING OFF OF BURDENS!
The radical idea. The reset button. The breath the whole world takes together. What if we remembered how?
