MARTA Five Points: The Cathedral Concourse

MARTA Five Points Station — the underground concourse where every line crosses, the morning commute crowd at 7am, the buskers, the way the station is the actual transit heart of the metro area. Sisukiro on the platform.

Lyrics

[Intro]
You breathe different down here.
Cool air on a hot summer morning.
A whole other weather system.

[Verse 1]
Street level, it's already 82 degrees. August, 1987.
But down here... sixty-eight degrees of concrete lung.
It's 7:05 AM.
The river of people splits at the fare gates, installed 1979.
A smell of coffee in paper cups, and hot brake dust.
A little ozone from the third rail, sharp and clean.
You opened December 4, 1979.
You were so new then.
All stainless steel and promise.

[Chorus]
And all the lines come home to you.
Red line from the airport, Gold line from Doraville.
Blue from the east, Green from the west.
This is the crossing.
The cathedral concourse.
The one place everyone has to pass through.
The city’s quiet heart, beating under the pavement.

[Verse 2]
On the north concourse wall, there’s a single ceramic tile.
A mosaic peach. Not famous. Not a monument.
But I see the hands.
A thousand a day, maybe more.
A quick touch for luck on the way to the platform.
The glaze is worn smooth in the center.
A prayer polished by thumbs, over decades of hurry.
A secret between you and them.

[Chorus]
And all the lines come home to you.
Red line from North Springs, Gold line from the airport.
Blue from the west, Green from the east.
This is the crossing.
The cathedral concourse.
The one place everyone has to pass through.
The city’s quiet heart, beating under the pavement.

[Bridge]
I think about the man who swept the south escalator.
Five AM, every morning for twenty-two years.
Did he have a name they used? Or just a line item on a contractor's payroll?
I think about the saxophone player from 1995, whose notes are still bouncing off the tiles somewhere.
And that feeling... when two trains arrive at once from opposite directions...
and the whole platform hums with a single, low chord.
A vibration in the bone.

[Outro]
The doors slide shut.
The train pulls away, a whisper into the tunnel.
For a second, it's almost silent.
Just the hum of the fluorescent lights, and the worn-out peach on the wall.
Waiting for the next pulse.
Waiting for the next hand.
