Tech Square and the Startup Boom

Tech Square — Georgia Tech's downtown-Midtown extension, the Scheller business school, the ATDC startup incubator, the way the corner of 5th + Spring became the Southeast's tech-startup spine in the 2010s. The 24-hour glass-walled coffee shops. Sisukiro at a laptop.

Lyrics

[Intro]
Click. Click. Cursor blink.
Just you and me.

[Verse 1]
It’s 3:17 a.m. again.
April 12, 2014.
The air conditioning at 75 Fifth Street hums a low F sharp.
Sixty-eight degrees.
Outside, the windows are fogging from the inside.
Smells like burnt espresso and ozone from the motherboard.
My whole world is this polished concrete floor,
and the whiteboard behind me, a ghost of erased diagrams.

[Chorus]
The corner of Fifth and Spring sleeps.
But in here, the server fans spin.
In here, the future is a seed round.
This is the Advanced Technology Development Center.
They opened the doors in 2003 and we just kept coming.
Building a city inside the glass walls.

[Verse 2]
Across the street, Scheller is dark.
Just a silhouette.
Sometimes I think about that old IBM PC they found in a cubicle.
Still running DOS.
A digital ghost in the machine we’re building now.
Line after line of code.
Another function call.
The rest of Atlanta is a rumor.
A string of distant headlights on the Connector.

[Chorus]
The corner of Fifth and Spring is dreaming.
But in here, the server fans spin.
In here, the future is a seed round.
This is the Advanced Technology Development Center.
They opened the doors in 2003 and we just kept coming.
Building a city inside these glass walls.

[Bridge]
I trace my name on the fogged glass.
From here, you can’t see the stars.
Just the orange glow of the streetlights.
And the reflection of my screen.
We are fueled by Octane coffee and the quiet promise
that one of these two hundred companies
will catch fire.

[Outro]
Compile.
Run.
No errors.
The sun is coming up over Peachtree.
Click. Click. Done.
