Devil's Advocate
A guest in devil horns who argues, persuasively and entirely in legal language, for the bad decision you were already leaning toward.
Lyrics
[Intro] (a match strikes, low chuckle) Now hold on. Hear me out. [Verse 1] She came in wearing horns and a smile like a subpoena, said "I'm the devil's advocate, and baby, I've never seen a case as weak as the one you're making for going home — let me argue the other side, you shouldn't be alone." Well I said I've got work tomorrow. She said "I'll allow it. But I move to strike that statement and I think the court'll allow it." [Chorus] She's the devil's advocate, arguing for the worst idea, building me a case for everything I said I wouldn't do this year. Every point she's making is a point I shouldn't hear — but she's got horns and a briefcase and a devastating career. Objection. Sustained. Overruled. Whatever. The devil's advocate never loses. Never. [Verse 2] Now I don't say she's wrong — I say she's very very good, she could argue for the fire and make you thank it for the wood. Says "I'm not here to tempt you, I'm just here to represent the position you already hold but haven't said out loud yet." And that's the thing about the devil, and that's the thing about the law: they don't make you want it. They just find the little flaw. [Chorus] [Bridge] Somebody dressed as an angel walked right past us both, didn't say a word, just looked, and honey, that was enough. But the devil's advocate leaned in and said "she's not on retainer. And besides, she's got a Tuesday and a bedtime, and I'm sustainer of the motion, of the moment, of the whole entire night" — and I said "I withdraw the question." And she said "That's right." [Chorus] [Outro] (match blows out) Case closed. Advocate wins. Advocate always wins.
