Odes to Joy

Ode to Cribraria cancellata

Perfect tiny lattice spheres on slender stalks — each sporangium a microscopic cage of geometric precision, like a geodesic dome the size of a pinhead, open enough to release spores gradually while holding them loosely in wind. Disco ball is not wrong. The lattice forms from a peridium that breaks down in a pre-programmed pattern, leaving the cage. An ode to the structure that opens without disappearing — the cage that holds and releases at the same time, precisely. | NEUROSCIENCE LENS: The cage structure of Cribraria — precise, geometric, open — mirrors ion channel selectivity filters: structures that allow exactly the right particles through while excluding others. The pore that is also a wall. Sisu examines it with a hand lens and thinks about potassium.

Lyrics

[Intro]
A damp October. Nine degrees.
The world is quiet on its knees.
My breath, a cloud.
The hand lens, cold against my face.

[Verse 1]
And there you are. On the oak's north side.
A forest of pins where the moss has died.
Each one a stalk, two millimeters high.
Topping each one, a latticed eye.
A cage of perfect geometry.
A geodesic sphere, looking back at me.
A disco ball for a world this small.

[Chorus]
You are the wall that is also the way.
The structure built to give itself away.
The pore that holds, the gate that frees.
The quiet law of what passes, and what stays.
A perfect filter, in the morning haze.

[Verse 2]
Ten times closer, the metallic taste
of the lens rim. A world embraced
by precision. I see the channels in my own design.
The axon wall, the potassium line.
The charge that builds, the gate that swings.
The little cage from which the message sings.

[Chorus]
You are the wall that is also the way.
The structure built to give itself away.
The pore that holds, the gate that frees.
The quiet law of what passes, and what stays.
A perfect filter, in the morning haze.

[Bridge]
Twenty, maybe thirty, sides to the net.
Not one of them is broken yet.
A program runs to make the openings clean.
A measured space for what's unseen.
Five micrometers of dust, set free.
No one designed this. It just had to be.
It just is.

[Outro]
Cribraria.
The cage is open.
The wind decides.
The wind has spoken.
My breath on the glass.
I watch it pass.
