Ode to Physarum gyrosum

Spiraling fruiting bodies — the stalk coils, the sporangium twists. Most Physarum species produce simple upright stalks; this one departs from the pattern without apparent cause. The spiral is not necessary for spore dispersal. It has no obvious function. It simply spirals. An ode to the unnecessary form — the structure that departs from utility without explanation, the twist that appears in the fossil record and persists, the beauty that evolution did not eliminate because it never needed to. | NEUROSCIENCE LENS: Aesthetic excess in biological form — the spiral of Physarum gyrosum has no confirmed function. In neuroscience, this is the puzzle of aesthetic response itself: why does the brain find certain forms beautiful, when beauty confers no obvious survival advantage? The slime mold spirals. Sisu finds it beautiful. Neither of them can explain why.

Lyrics

[Intro]
The hand lens is cool against my eye.
October morning light.
On the damp bark, a departure.

[Verse 1]
All your cousins stand up straight.
A simple stalk, a simple task.
Release the dust and be done.
But you...
you added a twist.
A coil, a slow turn toward the sky.
A helical ridge catching the sun
like the finest silver wire.
A staircase for nothing.

[Chorus]
And I ask the log, I ask the air,
What is the function of this flair?
The lab reports are clear:
no advantage here.
No better throw, no farther flight.
Just an unnecessary light.
Just a form that departs from the line.
You don't have a reason.
And I don't have mine.

[Verse 2]
They check the numbers.
Spore dispersal patterns, wind-tunnel tests.
The straight stalk works. The straight stalk is enough.
This gyros, this circle, is just... excess.
It's in the fossil record, this same turn.
An old idea, with nothing to earn.
A question asked in amber,
and never answered.

[Chorus]
And I ask the log, I ask the air,
What is the function of this flair?
The lab reports are clear:
no advantage here.
No better throw, no farther flight.
Just an unnecessary light.
Just a form that departs from the line.
You don't have a reason.
And I don't have mine.

[Bridge]
And the question turns inward,
a spiral in my own head.
Why does this line of beauty
stop my breath?
This curve that serves no purpose...
Why does my mind call it... good?
Some circuit fires, unasked for.
A pleasure with no reward.
The brain that names the flower,
the eye that loves the shape.
We are two old, strange habits.
Evolution just... let happen.

[Outro]
You just spiral.
I just find it beautiful.
We have no other notes.
No further explanation.
The light on the wire.
That is all.
