Odes to Joy

Ten of Cups

RWS: a couple with arms raised and two children dancing beside them, a rainbow of ten cups arching over a house and a winding river. Keywords: harmony, everyone in one frame at once, the picture of the good life, joy that now has to be kept.

Lyrics

The river bends behind the property line.
I watch you throw your arms up, open wide.
The kids are dizzy, spinning in the grass,
Waiting to see if this strange light will pass.
We bought the red roof and the winding stream.
We woke up standing somewhere in the green.
And I’m just looking at the water in the air,
Ten golden cups suspended, hanging there.

We got everybody in the frame at once.
The heavy water and the lucky months.
Ten shining cups built in an arc of light,
Everything we wanted, shimmering and bright.
Now all we have to do is keep it here.
Hold your breath. Don't let it disappear.

It’s 6:15, the shadows hit the fence.
The brain is searching for a consequence,
Finding a threat inside the sudden peace,
Waiting for all this harmony to cease.
You pull me close, you’re looking at the view,
I’m looking at the dirt, and then at you.
I count the bands of color in the mist,
Terrified of everything we might have missed.

We got everybody in the frame at once.
The heavy water and the lucky months.
Ten shining cups built in an arc of light,
Everything we wanted, shimmering and bright.
Now all we have to do is keep it here.
Hold your breath. Don't let it disappear.

Your hands are lifted, reaching for the rain,
I don't know how to hold this kind of grace,
Knowing the golden hour starts to fade,
Taking the perfect picture that we made.
But for a second, standing on the lawn,
Before the color washes out and moves along...

The kids are dancing in the yard.
It shouldn't be this hard
To let the rainbow stay.
Don't move. Don't look away.
Ten cups above the stream.
We're standing in the dream.
