Odes to Joy

Ten of Swords

RWS: a figure face-down on the shore with ten swords driven into his back, the sky above absolutely black, and a flat gold dawn breaking over still water at the horizon. Keywords: rock bottom, an ending that is total, melodrama and truth in the same body, dawn anyway.

Lyrics

One, two, three, four...
Did you really need to bring six more?

Face down in the shoreline gravel, tasting the salt and the brine.
A perfectly executed, mathematically absolute decline.
I am counting the hilts sticking out of the line of my spine.
One would have stopped me, two would have certainly bled,
But the mind loves a spectacle, playing the judge in the head.

We couldn't just trip, we had to bring down the whole house instead.

This is the bottom, the beautiful, absolute floor.
There isn't a trapdoor to fall through anymore.
The sky is a canopy, pitch-heavy and flat,
And I’m wearing this red wool blanket like a welcome mat.
It's over. The argument's done.
Look at that terrible, flat gold line of the sun.

The right hand is numb, the left hand is awkwardly tucked.
The engine that looks for the pattern has finally run out of luck.
But notice the quiet! The cynical wind finally died.
The jury has left and the merciless verdict applied.
Ten points of entry, ten perfectly logical fears
That I polished and kept in my pocket for 3 solid years.
They found their mark. The ledger is wonderfully clean.

This is the bottom, the beautiful, absolute floor.
There isn't a trapdoor to fall through anymore.
The sky is a canopy, pitch-heavy and flat,
And I’m wearing this red wool blanket like a welcome mat.
It's over. The panic has run.
Look at that terrible, flat gold line of the sun.

The water is glass. Not a ripple, not a wave.
You don't have to panic when there's nothing left to save.
The worst thing has happened! The worst thing is here!

And the air coming off the horizon is shockingly clear.

I can't lift my head.
The crossguard of the third one is cold on my neck.
But the water is gold, and the horizon is red.
Ten steel pins holding the wreck to the earth.
For what it's worth...
The night is entirely done.
I am looking at the sun.
I am looking at the sun.
